SLO Tango -- Tonight @ Nexus: Hearing the Beat 💓

As I promised/threatened last week, this week's classes at Nexus will focus
more on musicality. This is an experiment, so we'll be looking for students
to engage and give us feedback so we can keep improving!

This week's musical focus will be on the most fundamental musical element:
the *beat. *On this foundation, we can build all the other elements
(rhythm, melody, accent, dynamics...) The good news is that humans have a
natural ability to hear beats
<https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4321134/>, so we're all off to a
great start!

   - *6:30 - 7:30pm: "Beyond fundamentals" class*. Continuing to master the
back sacada/lapiz/planeo figure we've been working on, with additional
focus on placing this sequence into music (so you can actually use it!)
   - *7:30 - 8pm: 1-2-3 Tango Level 1: Moving Together*. Our goal is to
dance consistently on the beat, using moves you already know.
   - *8 - 8:30pm: 1-2-3 Tango Level 2: Taking Turns*. Dancing on the beat,
with an understanding of phrases - again, using material you already know.
   - *8:30 - 9pm: 1-2-3 Tango Level 3: Key Elements*. More boleos! With an
added focus on finding accented beats in the music to place all those
   boleos.

What's different this week?

   - 1-2-3 Tango classes will be *more structured*, with exercises followed
by a full tanda of dancing.
   - We'll *listen to a sample* of each song before dancing, to start
internalizing the music before trying to move.
   - We'll *talk explicitly about music*. *This is* *not a lecture*! The
intent is not to go deep on music theory or tango knowledge, just to spend
enough time here to get our minds oriented towards music. If you're the
kind of person who does want to nerd out, or if all this is new to you and
you want to learn more, this article from Tangology 101
<https://www.tangology101.com/main.cfm/id/983> is a good place to start.

*Next *week's classes will focus on material that will provide a foundation
for 💃*Analía's Tango Workshop*💃, from March 21-23. She'll be covering
broad and deep material, from simple walks and stops to barridas, boleos,
and milonga rhythm. See SloTango's workshop page
<https://slotango.org/Workshop2503.htm> for a full description of Analía's
material, and come ask Rich (rich at slotango.org) if you've got any questions
about this upcoming workshop weekend!

Other upcoming events:

   - 🎭 *Saturday March 15, 6pm-midnight*: Nexus 3-year anniversary party
   <https://www.nexusslo.com/event-details/3-year-anniversary-masquerade-ball>.
A fancy masquerade ball with dance performances, live music, food, and
socializing with Nexus' entire dance community. Some tango songs will be
   played!
   - 💃*🕺Monday March 24, 6:30-8pm: *Bonnie & Dave's last Monday tango
class of spring 2025, at the Women's Club in Arroyo Grande.
