SLO Tango -- Milonga Thursday After Regular Classes

Mike and Jamie Stehula are in town this week visiting from Hawaii! Come out to Nexus Thursday for Rich and Emily's classes at 6:30. The special milonga with Mike and Jamie at 8:30pm. You do not need to attend class to attend the milonga, though everyone is welcome to do so. You can also come early and grab some pre-milonga food & drink at the Public Market.

I asked Mike for a short history of their tango experiences in SLO:

'We started in Tango in 2014. Our first class was at the Oddfellows Hall with Rich. Then, Laura took over the class and we continued with her for several years. We went to the Madonna Inn every Sunday, and Norm was always giving us encouragement. Michael started taking private lessons with Bonnie. Adrian and Pati also guided us at their house with group lessons. Michael continued with Todd giving him private lessons. Jamie understood the music quickly because she is a musician, but Michael struggled with the sound. Ken came to his rescue with lots of help learning the rhythm. So, with lots of help from the Tango community, we persevered, struggled, and improved.

"5 1/2 years ago, we moved to Kona, Hawaii. Covid had, of course, shut down Tango on the island. As dancing started again, there was a Tango community in Hilo, but not much available in Kona. As a result, we continued dancing together at home and later joined together with another dancer named Rita. Jamie and Rita started a group with their Facebook page called “JNR Tango“. We encouraged everyone that was interested to begin their Tango journeys. About two years ago, a dance studio opened in Kona called the Big Island Social Dance Club. We petitioned the owner to include Tango and began lessons twice a month. Using our inspiration from the SLO community, Tango for us continued to grow. Jamie and Michael now teach Tango, as well as invite guest instructors from around the islands and even from the mainland. We just finished having a very successful workshop for a four-day weekend with George Garcia as our master teacher.
