There is so much more to Tango than just dancing! Come early and get acquainted, then enjoy free discussion group (chamuyo) with Christy Coté. Get her perspective on the music, dance, and culture of Tango. Bring your questions and enjoy the evening with this internationally renouned master instructor from San Francisco. Come join in the fun.

Continue the evening with great food, drink, music, and most of all dancing. Christy will supply the music so be ready for a wonderful mix of music to dance some fantastic tandas. No cover for this social dancing event at Derek's Home, 1343 Pismo St, San Luis Obispo (off Johnson). Limited parking, please carpool if you can. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share and beverage of your choice.



Saturday, November 22nd at Nexus, San Luis Obispo

12:00 – 1:30 pm Close Embrace "Recipe for Success on the Dance Floor" - Part I (Beg)

A list of “ingredients” that will make you look and feel like an advanced dancers in Buenos Aires in not time at all. All in a comfortable close embrace with quality of movement, connection to your partner and most importantly musicality!

1:30 – 3:00 pm
Completing the Phrase with Creative Embellishing for Followers with Christy (Int)

Basic to advanced embellishments with creativity for more lyrical style Tangos, and how to complete the phrase. During the last 20 min of this workshop, followers will have the opportunity to try out their embellishments with the leaders from Rich’s workshop.

Leaders Find Opportunities for the Followers to Shine in the Dance with Rich (Int)

Basic patterning for finding the pauses or parades in the dance. Leader’s will learn clean and accurate technique for these patterns with each other and be able to lead the followers from Christy’s workshop during the last 20 min of the class.

These are an important precursor for the following advanced class.

3:30 – 5:00 pm Opportunities for the Followers to Shine in the Dance” (Adv)

Working with musicality and the structure of Argentine Tango to creatively find the pauses and parades in the dance allowing the followers to complete the musical phrasing with their embellishments. This workshop requires the leaders to be fluent with advanced elements of the dance in order to work on their own improvisational to create the opportunities.

Saturday, November 22nd, at Nexus, San Luis Obispo

Join us for a Milonga (social dancing) at Nexus, the same beautiful venue as the classes, $15 cover. Feel free to bring a beverage or snack to share.



Sunday, November 23rd at Nexus, San Luis Obispo

12:00 – 1:30 pm Close Embrace “Recipe for Success on the Dance Floor” - Part II (Int)

A list of “ingredients” that will make you look and feel like an advanced dancer in Buenos Aires in no time at all. All in a comfortable close embrace with quality of movement, connection to your partner, and most importantly musicality! It is strongly recommended for all participants to take Part I on Saturday.

1:30 – 3:00 pm Boleos and Soltadas to Nuevo tango music (Int - Adv)

Fun improvisation of effortless smooth Back and Forward Boleos combined with a Soltada (breaking of the embrace) danced to Nuevo Tango music.

3:30 – 5:00 pm Fun Milonga Pasos for all! (Int - Adv)

Christy’s favorite Milonga Pasos and how to work them into your favorite Milonga songs including Traditional and Alternative Milongas.


Weekend Classes at Nexus, San Luis Obispo:

3845 S. Higuera, Downstairs in the SLO Public Market, across Tank Farm from Trader Joe's. If you have not previously signed the Nexus online liability waver, please do in advance.



Cost for 90-Minute Group Classes: $35 per person per class. Register for multiple classes at once and save: 2 for $65, 3 for $90, 4 for $110, 5 for $130, or get all 6 for $145. Pre-register online.

The last 15 minutes of each 90-minute class will be for practice and/or warm-up for next class. Please try to arrive early so you don’t miss anything.

Private instruction is available for $130 per hour, discounted to $110 for singles or couples who have registered for at least one group class. Please contact Rich to schedule private classes.



This year Christy Coté marks 29 years teaching, performing & choreographing Argentine Tango. Based in San Francisco, Christy is one of the most respected teachers of Argentine Tango in the U.S. today. Her popular Tango Boot Camps have attracted hundreds of students of all levels. She is best know for her instructional videos available by subscription at Dance Vision with partners George Garcia, Eduardo Saucedo, Ney Melo and Marcelo Molina. She is also one of the featured teachers and performers for CITA, The International Tango Congress in Buenos Aires. Christy was honored to be the first American to be selected to join the judge’s panel for the Argentine Tango USA Official USA Championships. Christy was a founding member of the all female tango company, Tango Con*Fusion with whom she has performed across the U.S. and in Buenos Aires and choreographed for extensively for 20 years.
